Women invited to learn about airport fire service

The Hawaii Department of Transportation is partnering with the Department of Human Resources Development to conduct two “Women in Airport Fire Service” workshops from 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Airport Conference Center at Honolulu International Airport, located at 400 Rodgers Blvd. on the seventh floor of the interisland terminal parking structure. The sessions are free and are expected to last approximately 90 minutes. Parking validation will be provided.

The workshop is part of a recruitment initiative designed to increase awareness of Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting careers for women. Topics will include how to prepare and submit an online application, ARFF career opportunities, and the firehouse culture from a woman’s perspective. Women are encouraged to learn more about a career with ARFF by registering for one of the sessions.

To register, email HDOT-EEO@hawaii.gov including your first and last name, your preference for the morning or afternoon session and the subject: “Women in Airport Fire Service” before 4:30 p.m. Nov. 18. Registration is free. Seating is limited to 90 women per session and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Only registered, confirmed individuals will be allowed to attend the workshop.

Master Gardener classes planned

The University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service is accepting applications for the 2016 Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program for home gardeners until Nov. 27. The course begins Jan. 26 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays through mid-April. The three-hour classes are held at the Kona Extension office in Kainaliu.

Course topics include basic botany, Native Hawaii plants, invasive species, tropical ornamental plants, plant nutrition, soil fertility and nutrient management, insect and plant disease management, plant propagation and pruning, food crops, organic gardening and diagnosing plant health problems.

The fee for the 15-class course is $150 in advance.

VFW announces weekly schedule

VFW Post 12112, located behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, will host several events this week.

The Activities Committee meets at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Thursday Night Football kicks off at 3 p.m. with free light pupu provided.

The Friday $5 dinner will be spaghetti with salad and dessert from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited.

Korean War Veterans Association meets at 10:30 am. Saturday, followed by the VFW meeting at 11:30.

All VFW members and the public are invited to a soup and salad dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $15.

Korean War Veterans Association meets

The Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 at the VFW meeting hall, 74-5543 Kaiwi St., Suite 185A behind Kona Locksmith.

Membership is open to anyone who has seen honorable service in any of the Armed Forces of the United States, defined as Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard if said service was within Korea including territorial waters and airspace at any time Sept. 3, 1945 to the present, or said service was outside of Korea June 25, 1950 to Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.

Palace is site of ball fit for royalty

The Daughters of Hawaii and Calabash Cousins present “Pomp &Circumstance Ball, an Evening at Hulihee” from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, on the seaside palace grounds.

The fundraiser will have a festive ”royal ball” theme and attendees are invited to wear Hawaiian formal dress. The evening will showcase a fashion show of vintage and modern holoku gowns, which will also be displayed on mannequins. In addition, people dressed in period finery will mingle with guests. A highlight of the event will be an exhibition on Kalakaua and a rare viewing of alii uniforms.

Amy Hanaialii Gilliom headlines the entertainment lineup with an opening ceremony of chant and Hawaiian performing arts by kumu hula Etua Lopes and his Halau Na Pua Ui O Hawaii. The Merrie Monarchs will serenade the crowd as guests enter the palace gate.

Attendees will enjoy a movable feast. Befitting royalty, there will be dancing under the stars and attendees can bid on fine merchandise and activities during the live and silent auction. Brightly illuminated and bedecked for the special evening, the palace will be open for visitation.

Mauna Kea Quilter meeting Saturday

Mauna Kea Quilters meets from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the meeting room of the Thelma Parker Memorial Library. A business meeting, show-and-tell and sharing of new ideas and techniques are planned.

Each year members donate quilts to help raise money for worthwhile organizations in the area and at Christmas, quilted stockings and quilts for needy children.

America Recycles Day is Sunday

Sunday is America Recycles Day. Sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, this nationally recognized day is dedicated to recycling across the United States.

America/Hawaii Recycles Day falls on the final day of the fifth annual Recycle-Bowl School Competition. Ten schools in Hawaii are participating in this nationwide event to collect and recycle as much as possible on their campus. Students on Keaau Elementary, Konawaena Middle, Konawaena High, Pahoa Intermediate-High and Volcano School of Arts and Sciences are undertaking the Recycle-Bowl challenge.

Recycle Hawaii has presented its 2015 Keeping It Green Hawaii award to KTA Super Stores. This Hawaii Island family supermarket business demonstrates “Green Initiatives” such as the 3 Rs, renewable energy, youth service-learning projects and supporting locally grown food and products.

Waikoloa Village Outdoor Circle to hold plant sale

Waikoloa Village Outdoor Circle will hold its annual plant sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Waikoloa School Plex.

Free concert honors King Kalakaua

The public is invited to enjoy a free Afternoon at Hulihee Palace from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, to remember the late King Kalakaua. Presenting the Hulihee Palace Band, hula and serenade by the Merrie Monarchs, the event is part of a yearlong series that honors Hawaii’s past monarchs and historical figures. Donations are appreciated. Bring a beach mat or chair as seating won’t be provided.
