Historical society plans wreath making trip
The Kona Historical Society’s fundraising holiday wreath making 4WD Jeep trip is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The wreaths are easy to do and will remain beautiful for months. During the trip, participants will be picking fresh ohia and other natural materials along the way. Cost for the trip is $110 with all wreath making materials besides the ones picked during the trip. Instruction is provided along with a stew lunch and hot drinks. Operation Christmas child begins
Living Stones Collection Center in Kailua-Kona will serve as a collection site for Operation Christmas Child — the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. The annual Samaritan’s Purse project asks the public to fill shoe boxes with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement to be distributed to children in need.
The collection center will be open from Monday to Nov. 23 where anyone can drop off a gift-filled shoe box to send to a child overseas. Located at 76-6224 Alii Drive, the center will be open from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday and Nov. 18 and 20; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, and Nov. 19 and 21; noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 22 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 23. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has delivered gift-filled shoe boxes to more than 124 million children in more than 150 countries and territories. For many of these children, a gift-filled shoe box is the first gift they have ever received.

Learn to prevent holiday weight gain
Vivienne Aronowitz, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator will present “How to Thrive during the Holidays and Beyond” from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday in the third floor conference room of Kona Professional Center, 75-169 Hualalai Road behind the credit union.
Attendees will learn how to prevent weight gain through the holidays and make successful new year’s resolutions. The class is free.

Grant funds new cardiac telemetry system at KCH
First Insurance Co. of Hawaii recently awarded the Kona Hospital Foundation a $1,500 grant to help fund a new cardiac telemetry system at Kona Community Hospital.
A telemetry system is a continuously electronic patient monitoring system. This tool allows hospital personnel to monitor heart rate, heart rhythm, breathing and other vitals at the patient’s bedside, as well as at a remote location like a nursing station.
A Philips IntelliVue Cardiac System will replace the hospital’s current telemetry system, which will become outdated in June 2016. The new system will give the hospital the capacity to accommodate 15 patients at a time for cardiac monitoring, up from 12.
