Kamehameha Schools Hawaii will stage a performance of the popular Broadway musical “West Side Story” Nov. 19-21 at the William Charles Lunalilo Center on its Keaau campus.

“West Side Story” is a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” set in 1950s New York City, as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks.

The musical, based upon Arthur Laurents’ book of the same name, explores the rivalry between the two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds, as the protagonist Tony (played by junior Daylan Kalai) falls in love with Maria (played by junior Shariah Olomua), the sister of the rival gang leader.

With music and score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, notable songs from the production include “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Maria.”

Proceeds from the production will help to offset the cost of the Hoike A Hai performing arts department trip to Scotland to perform at the American High School Theatre Festival at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. Tickets are $5 at http://blogs.ksbe.edu/hah/ for information.
