Kurashima named doctoral fellow
A Native Hawaiian scholar from the Big Island has been selected as a 2015–16 Mellon-Hawaii Doctoral Fellow to pursue original research and advance her academic career.
Natalie Kurashima is a PhD candidate in the botany program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Kurashima’s research focuses on the restoration of traditional Hawaiian food systems and landscapes as a tool for biodiversity conservation, cultural perpetuation and resilience against climate change. She is a resident of Waimea and is doing her research on the Kahaluu filed system in Kona.
The Mellon-Hawaii Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides a stipend and mentoring to enable doctoral fellows to complete their dissertations before accepting their first academic posts, and postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to publish original research early in their academic careers.

Miolii Charter School earns Hiki No award
Hiki No Executive Producer Robert Pennybacker visited Kua o ka La Public Charter School Milolii Hipuu Virtual Academy to present the 2015 Hiki No Best News Writing Award for the “Mauna Kea TMT” feature story.
The story is about one student’s struggle between his love of science and his respect for his Hawaiian culture. The story followed him as he explored different perspectives on the conflict surrounding the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea. Hiki No is PBS Hawaii’s statewide student news network.

Oct. 5: In Swiss team play, first went to Chuck Clark, Jim Elstran, Dorothy Case and Butchie Hayward; second, Gail Mullen, Lois Griffiths, Lynn Puri and Sara Ito.
