A groundbreaking and blessing ceremony for the future Waimea District Park will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the park site located off of Ala Ohia Road. Parker Ranch Inc. will provide access and event parking at the site of its former headquarters located above its rodeo arena. Refreshments and light pupu will be served.

Contractor Nan Inc. has been hired to build the project’s first phase, which will involve developing 24 acres of diversified indoor and outdoor recreational facilities at a cost of $23.9 million. Engineering firm Akinaka and Associates Ltd. led the team that expedited design work.

Key features will include a facility with three indoor, multisport courts; a lighted, multiuse sports field complete with spectator seating; a keiki playground; accessible walkways; more than 150 paved parking spaces; landscaping; and various infrastructure needed to support the new park.

It is expected to be completed and open to the public in December 2016.

Parker Ranch donated the 24-acre park site to Hawaii County to fulfill prior rezoning obligations.
