KAILUA-KONA — A man is in custody after an indictment on drug, child abuse and kidnapping charges brought the total number of charges he is facing to 17.

Michael Phillip Patrakis, 43, Kailua-Kona, is charged with first-degree meth trafficking, first-degree promoting a detrimental drug, two counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, four counts of first-degree promoting child abuse, two counts of second-degree promoting child abuse, abuse of a family or household member, third-degree sexual assault, kidnapping, second-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree terroristic threatening and use of a computer in the commission of a separate crime.

The charges largely reflect those of an earlier case filed on Sept. 25, which had 11 charges. The additional cases are primarily drug-related.

Patrakis turned himself in at 5 a.m. Monday after defense attorney Jason Kwiat informed him about the bench warrant in the new case.

Patrakis was out on a $100,000 bond in the previous case.

The bail rose to $250,000 with the additional charges, which deputy prosecuting attorney Sheri Lawson said was a necessary increase. She cited his previous criminal history in California and said he was a flight risk.

Kwait said that his client was no less likely to show up to court with the additional charges.

The bond also dictates he stays away from the juveniles listed in the indictment.

The prosecution has agreed to dismiss the September case. However, they want to do it without prejudice, meaning they could refile the case later. The defense seeks to have it dismissed with prejudice, laying it to rest.
