Highway 19’s Umauma Bridge remained closed Monday, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.
It is not yet known when the temporary bridge, which is located in the vicinity of mile markers 16 and 17 in Hamakua, will reopen. A detour is in effect via Old Mamalahoa Highway. Delays of up to 30 minutes should be expected.
The closure was prompted last week because of high water levels following heavy rain in East Hawaii, according to Civil Defense. The official said assessments still need to be conducted to determine if the bridge is safe.
