Pau hana talk on marine photography is today

A talk will address the question, “How can visual media be used as an effective outreach and marketing tool for science?”

Kailua-Kona resident, underwater photographer and science communication specialist Christine Shepard will discuss her role in launching a research and outreach program for the University of Miami’s Shark Research Lab. The talk is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Center, 73-4485 Kahilihili St.

Attendees should bring a pupu and nonalcoholic beverages to share during the potluck. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged.

Kona Sunset Farmers Market celebrates its first year

A one-year anniversary and Thanksgiving celebration will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Kona Sunset Farmers Market in Kmart parking lot.

Attendees can win prized from vendors by answering market trivia questions. Free birthday cake and food samples will be offered. Live music will feature the UKE and Bass w/Friend.

The market is held from 2 p.m. to dusk every Wednesday.

Lins completes yoga teacher training

Kamaaina sale raises $550 for Humane Society

UFO Parasail had a One-Day-Only, Kamaaina Special on Nov. 8 with all proceeds from parasail rides taken by residents going to the Hawaii Island Humane Society. UFO Parasail raised $550 for the Hawaii Island Humane Society.

Grinch to pose for free photos

Kona Stories Community Book Store will celebrate its ninth birthday and Small Business Saturday by offering free photos with the Grinch from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. The store will provide a camera, or participants may use their own. Free gift wrapping, samples from cookbook author Sonia Martinez and a free glass of Brenda’s sangria will also be offered.

Study abroad in Ireland

Hawaii Community College is offering an opportunity to study in Ireland.

Participants will learn about the culture, ecology and people of Ireland, study similarities and differences to the Hawaiian islands and earn college credit. The study will run from May 16-26, 2016, not including travel days.

Participants must enroll at Hawaii Community College to take advantage of the study abroad opportunity. Application is free for Hawaii residents, and the college has an open door admissions policy. Space is limited and deadlines are approaching.

Farm to School Program awards grant to Kealakekua School

Kona Pacific Public Charter School was awarded a $41,785 grant by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through its Farm to School Program.

The school will conduct an audit of existing farm-to-school activities and develop a farm to school action plan that incorporates on-site farm and student educational activities.

Humane Society to participate in Giving Tuesday

Hawaii Island Humane Society has joined Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving that encourages philanthropy and generosity worldwide.

The organization’s fundraising goal is $10,000. Contributions received will help offset ongoing costs for medical and general expenses related to animals in its care. Giving Tuesday is Dec. 1.
