Police arrest 28 for suspected DUI

Police arrested 28 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Nov. 23 and Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.

Kona officers arrested 15 drivers while Puna officers nabbed six motorists. South Hilo police cited five drivers and South Kohala arrested two motorists.

So far this year, there have been 992 DUI arrests compared with 1,062 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.6 percent.

There have been 1,386 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,420 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.4 percent.

So far this year, there were 17 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 54.5 percent.

To date, six fatalities were related to drugs and five deaths to combination of both drugs and alcohol.
