Melvin Soares Sr.

Melvin Glenn “Tarzan” Soares Sr., 83, of Kailua-Kona died Nov. 25, 2015, at The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu. Born in Hawaii, he was a retired head carpenter for the state Department of General Services, member of the 3 Days and 3 Nights Study Hall and a Korean War Marine Corps veteran.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Dec. 7 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10 a.m. service. Burial follows at noon at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Marvee Soares of Kailua-Kona; sons, Melvin (Renette) Soares Jr. of Pahoa, Mitchell (Lisa) Soares of Hilo; daughters, Melanie (Bruce) Ballard of Reno, Nev., Lynne (Theo) Robledo of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Ethelynne Teves of Honolulu, Nona Keaulana of Seattle, Brenda Manuel of Anchorage, Alaska, Marsha Nahulu of Tacoma, Wash.; brother, Markham (Wanda) Soares of Honolulu; 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

David Rainwater

David Buren Rainwater, aka David B. Smith, 88, of Keaau died Dec. 1, 2015, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo. Born Jan. 13, 1927, in Springfield, Mo., he retired from the Air Force as a Staff Sergeant and served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam era.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. Dec. 8 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 10 a.m. prayer service.

Family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcomed. Burial will follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2

He is survived by wife, Felicitas Smith of Keaau; daughters, Davina (David) Poohina of Keaau, Dina (Steven) Velez of Portland, Ore.; brother, Dwight Smith of Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Miyuki Higashi

Visitation for Miyuki “Mitts” Higashi, 90, of Hilo will begin at 3 p.m. Dec. 9 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo. A 5 p.m. service follows. An earlier published obituary omitted the service date.

Charlene Inouye

Charlene Leilehua Inouye, 65, of Hilo died Nov. 18, 2015, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a retired sales clerk with the former JC Penney in Hilo and member of the Ke Kilohana O Ka Malamalama Church.

Friends may call at 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 6 p.m. service. Burial will be held at 9 a.m. Dec. 11 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn and flowers be omitted.

She is survived by husband, Yoshihiro Inouye of Hilo; sons, Justin (Marilyn) Inouye of Keaau, Jeffrey (Lucinda) Inouye, Jeremy (Lynn Sumi) Inouye, both of Hilo; father, Charles Kahawai Sr. of Hilo; brothers, Carl (Ahulani) Kahawai, Chanley (Kelly) Kahawai, both of Hilo; four grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ellen Ho

Ellen Leilani Shodahl Ho, 75, of Hilo, formerly of Kailua, Oahu, died Nov. 22, 2015, at Pohai Malama Hospice Facility in Hilo. Born April 11, 1940, in Kohala, she was a retired employee at Hilo Medical Center and Maluhia Hospital, member of the University of Hawaii Sorority – Ke Anuenue Alumnae Association.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Dec. 11 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. A luncheon will follow at Dodo Mortuary. Family requests aloha attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.

She is survived by husband, Ronald Ho of Hilo; sons, Gregory (Luon) Ho of Wamiea, Geoffrey (Naho) Ho of Keaau, Guy (Cheryl) Ho of Panawea; daughter, Tracy (Shannon) Poe of Waiakea Uka; 14 grandchildren.
