Project Grad receives funding

Kealakehe Project Grad recently received grants totaling $8,000 from the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Kukio Community Fund and West Hawaii Fund, which is supported by the Stanley and Renee Tomono Family Fund. The grants will help in continuing the mission of Project Grad in providing a safe and secure, alcohol-, tobacco- and drug-free annual high school graduation celebration.

Funding this event proves an annual challenge. The costs to run the event average more than $30,000 for approximately 250 students. Due to grants like those received and community donations, the organization has been able to continue to facilitate the event and even offer scholarships to qualified students to attend.

Since its inception in 2000, Kealakehe Project Grad has provided an alcohol- and drug-free event to graduating high school seniors. On average, 80 percent of the graduating class from Kealakehe High School participates annually in this nightlong event. The organization also serves graduating seniors from West Hawaii Explorations Academy and qualifying home-schooled seniors.

Seniors from qualified schools are encouraged to register early. Next year’s event will take place from 9 p.m. May 21 to 6 a.m. May 22. A limited number of scholarships are also available.
