LIHUE(AP) — The Kauai Police Department will be the first department in Hawaii to outfit its officers with body cameras when it starts using the devices this week.

Hawaii News Now reports (http://bit.ly/1jTVCjN ) that patrol officers are expected to begin using the cameras and recording encounters by the end of the week.

Kauai Chief Darryl Perry says the decision to start implementing the 105 devices still hasn’t been approved by the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers union. But he says nearly all the changes to the body camera policy that the union has requested have been made.

The Kauai Police Department was the first department in Hawaii to test the cameras last year.

Maui and Hawaii County police departments have since completed pilot projects and plan to purchase the devices.
