Chris Ridley will present “What Is Dementia?” at 6 p.m. Jan. 8. This seminar will include the latest information on the warning signs of dementia. Information on dementia, stages, symptoms and treatments will be provided.

When she receives a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, Alice and her family find their bonds thoroughly tested. Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking and inspiring.

All events are free but will have limited seating. Reservations: 443-7360.

Tree recycling program begins Saturday

Hawaii County Solid Waste Division of the Department of Environmental Management is again offering “treecycling.”

Between Saturday and Jan. 17, residential customers may leave trees in the designated areas (not in the rubbish chutes) at any of the county Solid Waste Division facilities during normal business hours except for the Milolii and Ocean View Transfer Stations. The facility attendants will direct the public to the proper drop-off point.

All commercial customers must recycle trees at either the East Hawaii Organics Facility in Hilo or the West Hawaii Organics Facility in Waikoloa.

Trees should be free from all decorations, stands, lights, tinsel and ornaments. Do not drop off artificial or flocked trees in the designated areas. Any flocked trees, artificial trees or trees with tinsel are not recyclable and may be disposed of in the regular trash chutes.

The public is also invited to recycle Kadomatsu decorations, which are normally a combination of bamboo, pine and flowers.
