Keep fireworks away from power lines

Hawaii Electric Light Co. is offering tips to stay safe on New Year’s Eve.

The company suggests those who plan to ignite fireworks choose a safe location, keeping away from anything flammable, including vegetation. Revelers should also stay clear of overhead power lines, and refrain from hanging fireworks or anything else on utility poles. They should keep themselves, ladders and poles at least 10 feet from power lines.

If an object should become entangled in an overhead power line, don’t try to free it. Call Hawaiian Electric’s 24-hour trouble line at 969-6666. In an emergency, call 911.
