Wind advisory in effect for Big Island summits

A wind advisory remains posted for the Big Island summits through this afternoon, according to the the National Weather Service.

West winds of 40 to 50 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, are forecast through 6 p.m. for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits above 8,000 feet in elevation.

Forecasters advised motorists to drive with “extreme caution,” especially those in high profile vehicles. The Mauna Kea access road was open as of this morning.
