Author discusses Hawaii-based historical book
Kona Historical Society’s Hanohano O Kona lecture series welcomes Susanna Moore, the award-winning author of five fiction novels and three Hawaii-based, nonfiction books. The event is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center.
Her latest book, “Paradise of the Pacific: Approaching Hawaii” will be the subject of her presentation and will touch upon the court of Kamehameha I in Kona, his marriage to the Maui chiefess Kaahumanu, the death of Kamehameha in 1819, and the arrival in Kona in 1820 of the First Company of American missionaries.
Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with the County of Hawaii, the lecture is free and open to all.

Kiwanis Club to learn about suicide prevention fundraiser
Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Humpy’s upstairs room in Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive. Nancy Sallee, a practicing marriage and family counselor working in Kealakekua, will discuss a suicide prevention benefit to be held March 20 at the Old Kona Airport Pavilion.

Canadian get-together planned Thursday
All Canadians on the Big Island are invited to attend a potluck party 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at pavilion No. 3 at the Old Kona Airport Park in Kailua-Kona.

VFW dinner is Friday
VFW Post 12112, located behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, offers dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Cost is $5 for this week’s meal, which is Cher’s Tacos with salad and dessert.

DLNR seeks input on Kealakekua Bay master plan
Interested people are invited to review and discuss the preliminary alternatives for the management and development of Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park at a meeting on Saturday in the Konawaena Elementary School Cafeteria
An open house is planned from 1 to 2:30 p.m., with a discussion session from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
The findings of studies conducted for the planning will be shared, along with the alternatives that address public use, management of important resources, and proposed facilities. The goal of this park planning is to balance the preservation of the cultural values and historical sites with the recreational use of the park.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of State Parks in partnership with Belt Collins Hawaii is hosting this meeting as part of the planning process for the Master Plan Update and an Environmental Impact Statement. Ellison Onizuka Science Day planned in Hilo
The public is invited for a day of science and space exploration during Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Science Day at 8 a.m. Saturday at University of Hawaii at Hilo, 200 W. Kawili St., Hilo.
This is a free event. Online registration is open to students in grades 4 through 12, parents, and teachers of any grade level.

Onizuka Space Center event commemorates Challenger
The Onizuka Space Center invites the public to a free event to commemorate the 30th year since the loss of the Challenger Space Shuttle.
The event is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 31.
NASA Astronaut Michael Fincke will present video footage of his Space Shuttle and Russian Soyuz spaceflights to the International Space Station. Claude Onizuka will also share comments on his brother’s life and legacy.
