Kona Historical Society offers Valentine’s gift boxes

Kona Historical Society is selling Valentine’s Day gift boxes of 100 percent Kona coffee and other goodies that will be shipped directly to the receiver.

Purchases support the educational programs and preservation projects of the Kona Historical Society, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

VFW announces events

VFW Post 12112, located behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, will host several events this week.

The Activities Committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. today.

Tracy’s onion burgers ,with salad and dessert will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday for $5.

The VFW Auxiliary will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Doors open at 10 a.m. on Super Bowl Sunday with a pot luck supplied by the fans.

A Mardi Gras dinner will be prepared by a Southerner and a picnic is planned on President’s Day with hamburgers and hot dogs supplied by the post.

Suicide prevention task force meets

The West Hawaii Suicide Prevention Task Force will hold a monthly meeting from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Community Health Center, 75-5751 Kuakini Highway, on the corner of Hualalai Road.

Everyone in the community is encouraged to attend. The group’s mission is suicide prevention and support to families and friends who are left behind in the wake of suicide. The task force is also planning the Hawaii Island Suicide Prevention Benefit to be held from 2 to 7 p.m. March 20 at the Old Kona Airport park Makaeo Pavilion.

Waimea Community meeting planned

Waimea Community Assoc. will meet at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the Waimea School cafeteria to discuss a World Conservation Congress Summit to be held in September. A mahalo potlock for emergency responders will follow.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation of for the Waimea Food Pantry. Attendees are also invited to bring a salad or main dish for the potluck planned from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Also on the agenda will be an update on the Anuenue Playground rejuvenation.

Update on local college given

Carrie Kuwada Phipps, educational specialist for the University Center, West Hawaii at Palamanui will showcase all programs offered through the new campus, which includes certificates, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, post-graduate certificates, master’s and doctorate degrees, and non-credit offerings.

She will also discuss Palamanui’s grand opening and community open house planned for Feb. 27, the community landscaping project, free upcoming workshops and on-site help with fall online application process.

The update meetings are scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, and from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.

Kona Orchid Society meets Friday

The Kona Orchid Society meets Friday at Makua Lani Christian Academy, 74-4966 Kealakaa St.

Dale Miyasaki, who owns Nuuanu Orchids in Honolulu, will speak about mini orchids, how they are created and how to care for them. Miyasaki is also an accredited judge with both the American Orchid Society and the Honolulu Orchid Society.

Those who have pest-free blooming orchids may bring them to show. Attendees should also bring a dish to share during the potluck.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and supper will be served at 6:15.

West Hawaii Hui Laulima meets

West Hawaii Hui Laulima will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday in the community meeting room on the ground floor of West Hawaii Community Health Center, which is at the corner of Kuakini Highway and Hualalai Road.

Paul Strauss, public health educator for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management Branch, Hawaii District Health Office, will provide a dengue fever update. Gideon Ramos, housing resource specialist with HOPE Services Hawaii will talk about homeless issues and services.

Attendees should not park on site or in the adjacent parking area. Parking is available across the street from the public library or Hualalai Medical Center.

Youth invited to hang out

Kuleana Education presents Ignite, a youth night for preteens and teens. The center will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday for youth ages 12 through 16 for activities such as movies, air hockey, ping pong, games and socializing.

The event is free and includes drinks and snacks.

Kuleana Education is at 75-5995 Kuakini Highway, Suite 415, in Pottery Terrace.

If the evening has a good turnout the event may be held regularly.
