American Legion meeting Wednesday

The American Legion Post 20 and American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Elks Club in the Old Industrial Area.

The gathering begins at 3:30 with fellowship and cocktails and the meeting commences at 4. After the meeting, the Elks will hold a Mardi Gras seafood gumbo dinner for $12. Those who would like to stay for dinner must call Dave Carlson at 325-6491 for reservations. Salsa dancing will follow.

Bluegrass musician featured at Brain Injury Support Group

The Brain Injury Support group meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Rehab Services just mauka of Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Road.

Carl and Alice Hoffman are the guest speakers. Carl is a traumatic brain injury survivor and known as the father of Alaskan bluegrass. The Hoffmans will discuss his recovery and share music that has been helpful in his recovery.

Seniors group plans Visitor’s Day

The Kailua-Kona Seniors meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai to celebrate the group’s first-ever Visitor’s Day. Each member is asked to bring a guest. Guests will learn about the club, and what activities are planned for the year and what we have done in the past. Any senior age 55 or older is invited to attend.

Committee on Status of Women meets

The Hawaii County on the Status of Women invites interested individuals to its meeting at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12 at North Hawaii Education and Research Center, 45-539 Plumeria St., Honokaa.

Helicopters visiting HPA Wednesday

Twelve Hawaii Preparatory Academy Middle School students will participate in a unique learning experience that involves two helicopters flying to the school’s upper campus on Wednesday.

Between 9 and 11:50 a.m. the students will have an opportunity to fly in a helicopter as one of their culminating activities for the school’s Theme Week program, “Come Fly with Me.” The helicopters will take off from HPA’s upper school baseball field and return about every 15 minutes. Mauna Loa Helicopters will make every effort to minimize rotor noise.

Business consulting firm launched

Mattson Davis, craft beer industry executive and food and beverage veteran, has launched Ulu Development, a new business development consulting firm based in Kailua-Kona.

Most recently, Davis served as president and director of restaurant and retail operations for Kona Brewing Co., positions he held for nearly 20 years.

As principal in Ulu Development, Davis will continue to support Kona Brewing Co.’s growth as a strategic advisor and member of the Kona Advisory Board. He will also serve as managing partner for the new Brewery Block in Kona, a six-acre mixed-use property.

Additionally, Davis will provide brand development and professional coaching consultation services to local, national and international businesses.

Odell joins Carlsmith Ball’s Kona office

Carlsmith Ball has announced that Andrew G. Odell has joined the firm’s Kailua-Kona office as a member of its Real Estate, Land Use and Hospitality and Environmental practice groups. Prior to joining Carlsmith Ball, Odell was an associate at Cades Schutte LLP, where he represented clients in real property litigation, including foreclosures and defended lenders and servicers in claims filed by borrowers.

Odell received his bachelor of arts degree in general engineering with a minor in entrepreneurship and management from Johns Hopkins University in 2003 and earned his law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii, in 2010.
