Yoichi Sato

Yoichi Sato, 93, of Hilo died Feb. 8, 2016, at the Hilo Medical Center. He was born June 29, 1922, in Papaikou.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Feb. 12 at Ballard Family Mortuary- Hilo for a service. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Homelani Memorial Park and Cemetery. Condolences may be posted at ballardfamilymortuaries.com.

He is survived by spouse, Shigeko Takeguchi of Hilo; numerous nieces and nephews.

Fred Canale

Fred N. Canale, 79, died Jan. 31, 2016, at Kaiser Medical Center in Walnut Creek, Calif. Born in November, 1936, he worked for the Contra Costa County’s Private Industry Council before retiring.

Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 13 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Brentwood, Calif. for a service. Interment will be held in private. He is survived by wife, Alice Canale; sister, Joanna Bluel of Antioch, Calif.; children, Lisa Canale-Wood (Alex) of Volcano, Tom (Corrin) of Martinez, Calif.; three grandchildren.

Anthony Gutierres

Anthony Gutierres, 65, of Honokaa died Jan. 3, 2016, at Hale Hoola Hamakua. Born Dec. 14, 1950, in Kohala, he was a custodian for Hawaii Preparatory Academy School and a U.S. Army veteran.

Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 13 at the Hawi Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Family requests casual attire be worn. An urn burial will be at a later date.

He is survived by daughters, Selene Gutierres, Misty (Jared Akasaki) Gutierres, both of Honolulu, Amber (Arthur Jones) Gutierres of California; sons, Anthony Gutierres Jr., Justin Gutierres, both of Honolulu; brothers, Kelven (Paticia) Gutierres of Bardstrom, Ky., Gilbert (Faye) Gutierres of Kohala; sisters, Cynthia (Eugene) Amar, Rosemary (Jeffery) Yamamoto, Priscilla (Ralph) Galan, all of Kohala, four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Yukiko Kajiwara, 87, formerly of Hilo died Jan. 5, 2016. She was born on in Papaikou.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Feb. 15 at Ballard Family Mortuary-Hilo for an 11 a.m. service. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Homelani Memorial Park and Cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by sons, Wesley (Ann) Kajiwara of Honolulu, Wayne (Evelyn) Kajiwara of Maui; daughter, Eileen (Nathan) Iwamasa of Honolulu; brother, Yiuzo Nii of Honolulu; sister, Nancy (Nobuo) Matsui of Hilo; five grandchildren.

Margaret Lee

Margaret Della Crivello Lee, 92, of Hilo died Jan. 17, 2016, at Regency Hilo Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.Born Oct. 29, 1923, in Pepeekeo, she was a retired teacher for Hilo Union Elementary School, a member of the Hawaii Government Employees Association, Hawaii State Teachers Association and Villa Franca Kumiai.

Friends may call for visitation from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 15 at Dodo Mortuary chapel with a 7 p.m. wake service. Friends may also call at 9 a.m. Feb. 16 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for a 10 a.m. Mass. Family requests aloha attire be worn, flowers and lei are welcome. Burial will be at Homelani Memorial Park, Lehua Section.

She is survived by sons, Robert (Sandra) Lee Jr., Dennis (Thelma) Lee Sr., Lloyd (Suzanne) Lee Sr. all of Hilo; daughters, Margaret Abreu of Keaau, Sharon Raniada of Hilo; brother, Peter (Irene) Crivello Jr. of San Bruno, Calif.; sister, Blanche Iaukea of Kailua, Oahu; 18 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Sarah-Mae Machado

Sarah-Mae “Sandie” A. Machado, 66, of Hilo died Jan. 24, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Jan. 8, 1950, in Lahaina, Maui, she was a retired high school teacher for Keaau High School and Pahoa High and Intermediate School.

Friends may call at 4:30 p.m Feb. 18 at Dodo Mortuary chapel, Hilo for a 6 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by sons, Marc (Tabbrie) Machado, Matthew Machado, both of Hilo; stepson, Terry (Sheila) Machado of Hilo; stepdaughters, Paula Rodrigues, Candace Tacub, both of Hilo; brother, Reynold Correia of Oahu; sisters, Georgina (Phil) Erdman of Oklahoma, Alexis (Terry) Limbaga of Oahu; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hajime Mukai

Hajime Mukai, 96, of Papaikou died Jan. 14, 2016, at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo. Born Aug. 10, 1919, in Papaikou, he was a veteran and retired from the U.S. Army as an interpreter for the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate.

Private services were held. Family requests no flowers or monetary gifts.

He is survived by wife, Fumie Mukai of Papaikou; daughter, Mandy Mukai of Honolulu; numerous nephews and nieces.

Fabiana Miranda

Fabiana Lydia Miranda, 72, of Hilo died Jan. 21, 2016. Born Feb. 5, 1943, in the Philippines, she worked as a janitor at Cheifess Kapiolani Elementary School.

She is survived by brothers, Antonio (Evelina) Jamir of California; Eduardo (Marie) Jamir of Philippines; sisters, Guadalupe Sangalang, Marilyn (Adelio) Torres, both of Philippines, Maria Magdalena (Eickson) Litonjua of New York, Lita Baligad of Hilo; stepsons, Michael (Sandy) Miranda of California, Gerald (Lisa) Miranda of Colorado, Paul Miranda of Hilo, James (Karen) Miranda of Nebraska; stepdaughters, Christine Mclaughlin of NewJersey, Monica Ryder of Austrailia, Marieta Martinez of California, Maryann Souza of Washington; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Verna Matsumoto

Verna M. Matsumoto, 89, of Captain Cook died Dec. 22, 2015, at her residence. Born in Honaunau on April 9, 1926, she was retired from the Hilo Probation Office and a member of Daifukuji Soto Mission.

Private services were held.

She is survived by daughters, Dannelle (Kerwin) Masunaga of Honaunau, Vanda (Myles) Kurashige of Honolulu; three grandchildren.

Blossom Kaneshiro

Blossom Sumiko Kaneshiro, 81, of Keaau died Dec. 18, 2015, at her residence. Born in Hilo, she was a retired school teacher for the Los Angeles public school system and a veteran of the U.S. Women’s Army Corp.

Private services were held. Family requests no flowers and no monetary gifts.

She is survived by brother, George (Setsuko) Yogi of Honolulu; sister, Nancy Takane of Honolulu; numerous nieces and nephews.
