A blocked Hawaii County sewer main led to the discharge of up to 3,000 gallons of untreated wastewater in Pepeekeo.

From about 10 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday, an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 gallons was discharged onto the grounds near an apartment on Kumula Street, according to the Hawaii County Wastewater Division.

Responding crews determined that the spill occurred because of a blockage in a county sewer main. They removed the backed-up sewage and obstruction, and cleaned and disinfected the area, according to the division.
