Kiwanis Club meets

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Humpy’s upstairs room in Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited. A representative of Kona Country Club will speak about the golf course renovations and services.

Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Kona Traffic Safety meeting planned

Kona Traffic Safety Committee will meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The committee discusses traffic issues with public officials who can make a difference. Everyone is welcome.

The committee meets the second Thursday of each month in the Mayor’s Conference Room of West Hawaii Community Center on the second floor Building C above the license bureau.

Blood drives canceled

Blood drives planned in March in West Hawaii have been canceled because of dengue fever. Blood drives have been increased on Oahu to make up for the 238-pint blood deficit.

Seniors meet Wednesday

The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai. Mary of HOPE, Inc. (The Friendly Place) will be the speaker. Members are asked to bring non-perishable food donations for the Food Basket. A member’s-only event will follow. A $2 fee for the event will be collected.

Caregiver workshop planned in Hilo

A free caregiver workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel in the Mala Ikena Room. Register at aarp.cvent.com/care3-10 or call (877) 926-8300.

Tony Taguba will talk about caring for elderly loved ones and about AARP Hawaii’s legislative priorities in support of caregivers.

Movie, dance lesson offered to Parkinson’s patients

The Waimea Parkinson’s Wellness Support Group will hold a free showing of the documentary, “Capturing Grace” at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tutu’s House in Waimea. Those with Parkinson’s, family, and friends are encouraged to attend.

Directed by David Iverson, the film showcases members of the renowned Mark Morris Dance Company and people with Parkinson’s joining hands and preparing for a one-time dance performance. It’s a story about the power of art and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Participants will have an opportunity to experience a Dance for PD 1-hour workshop led by trained dance professional, Marie Snyder and physical therapist, Madeline Sofranac, next door at CrossFit AllStar Gym beginning at 4 p.m.

Mauna Kea Quilters meet

Mauna Kea Quilters will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the meeting room of Thelma Parker Memorial Library in Waimea.

The group of patchwork quilters donates quilts to raise money for worthwhile organizations and has provided quilts to the police and fire department and North Hawaii Community Hospital for those in need.

The gathering includes a business meeting, show and tell and sharing ideas and techniques.

Learn to create desirable habitats for bees

Zach Mermel will teach a class about bees and other pollinators from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus. There will be a break for lunch.

Attendees will explore how to create a healthy diversity of habitats where the pollinators can thrive. Participants will be able to take home a sample of some these habitats after the workshop. More than 80 percent of food crops require pollination by bees, flies and other creatures.

Cost is $40, or $30 for Volcano Art Center members, plus a $15 materials fee.
