John Mydock’s “Koa Flower” piece, with its beautiful shiny finish and hints of gold leaf in the design, earned Best in Show at Harbor Gallery’s 2016 Winter Wood Show.

Harbor Gallery in Kawaihae recently announced all the winners and with the Best in Show prize, Mydock earned $250.

Each selection was made by tallying the votes cast by ballot from the public, with the most votes overall determining the Best in Show, and then the most votes in each of four remaining categories determining the winner of that category.

The award for joinery, which is boxes, furniture and marquetry, went to Thomas Pasquale for his “Curly Koa Jewelry Armoire,” a precision crafted piece.

The turning category was won by Mike Lai, whose “Norfolk Pine Bowl” with its mirror finish and translucent qualities along with its large size was the popular choice.

Scott Hare garnered the top award in sculpture with his carving of a solid slab of burled milo wood, called “Honu and Reef Scene,” embellished with an underwater reef scene of turtles, eels, fish and corals.

Rodney Crusat’s “Pineapple Ukulele,” featuring front and back with gorgeous birdseye curly Koa wood, sides of fiddleback curly Koa, headstock in the shape of a pineapple out of fiddleback curly Koa, and exquisite detail including sound holes on the sides and a built in pickup to enhance the sound, earned the open category award.

All individual category winners received $100.

The 2016 Summer Wood Show will take place in the gallery starting July 2. The gallery is open daily from 11:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. featuring the artwork of more than 200 Big Island artists.
