Henry Castro Sr.

Henry C. “Hank” Castro Sr., 91, of Hilo died March 23, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Paauhau, he was a retired truck driver with the former Mauna Kea Sugar Co., and owner of Hank’s Taxi.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. March 30 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service, followed by burial at the Alae Cemetery. The family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by sons, Henry Castro Jr., Randolph (Leenal) Castro, both of Hilo; daughters, Colleen (Bob) Pestano of Hilo, Laverne (John) Werner of Wisconsin, Gwen (Adam) Quinories of Keaau; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Geronima Solmerin

Geronima Ramos Solmerin, 94, of Hilo died March 16, 2016, at jer residence. Born May 5, 1921, in Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, she was a retired macadamia nut picker for the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Co. and member of the First United Protestant Church in Hilo.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. March 30 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. service. Friends may also call at 8 a.m. March 31 at the First United Protestant Church in Hilo for a 10 a.m. service. Casual attire and flowers are welcomed. Burial at Alae Cemetery.

She is survived by daughters, Daisy (Mario) Antonio of Keaau, Miriam (Juan) Guerrero; sons, Samuel (Estrellita) Solmerin, Winston (Ofelia) Solmerin, Joel (Aida) Solmerin, all of Hilo, Royal (Kathleen) Solmerin of Pepeekeo; sister, Sensya Bugarin of Philippines; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Melchora Tadina

Melchora “Meling” Arellano Tadina, 90, of Kurtistown died Feb. 27, 2016, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born June 4, 1925, in San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, she was a retired factory worker for Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Co. and member of the Waiakea Iloko Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. April 2 at Dodo Mortuary chapel, Hilo for a 10:30 a.m. service. Burial will follow at Alae Cemetery at 1 p.m. Casual attire.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
