An unidentified woman was killed Monday after she was struck by a vehicle on Highway 130, just south of Kaloli Drive in Keaau.

A 22-year-old Hilo man came to the Hilo Police Station about 1 a.m. Monday and reported that he may have been involved in a traffic collision in that area. Officers making checks in the area discovered a deceased female on the mauka shoulder of the highway, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Officers determined that the female victim appeared to be walking in the Pahoa direction on the mauka shoulder of the road when she was struck by a 2003 Ford Ranger pickup truck traveling in a southerly direction.

The woman was transported to the Hilo Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 6:09 a.m. Autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The victim is described as being “local” with brown hair, between the ages of 25 and 30 years old and wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs are involved.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide, accident involving death or serious bodily injury and no operator’s license cases.

Anyone with information on the case or the identity of the victim should call Officer Keith Nacis at 961-8119 or the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.

This is the sixth traffic fatality on the Big Island public roadways this year compared to five at this time in 2015.
