17th annual Kai Opua Pau Hana Regatta and 2nd annual dog paddle

April 17 is the 17th Annual Kai ‘Opua Pau Hana (formerly Businessmen’s) Regatta. Come join the fun for a day on the water and show your company’s team spirit. Choose your division and paddle for awards and bragging rights.

Divisions include: Bar/Restaurant/Hotel, Professional, Government, Retail and Construction. Crews can be Men, Women or Mixed. Dress your best to compete for the Best Costume Awards.

Registration starts at 8 a.m., and racing begins at 9 a.m.. Kai Opua will supply paddles and steersmen if desired. Bring your own paddles if possible.

Early registration is $110 per six person crew. Race day registration is $120 entry fee per six person crew. Double Hull entry fees are discounted if also entering six person events. Entry fee includes the after-regatta lunch and awards sponsored by Huggo’s and Corona.

This year is the 2nd annual Dog Paddle. One dog, one human, one SUP. Registration at 8 a.m., Dog Paddle at 9 a.m. $15 entry, $5 of entry goes to the Hawaii Island Humane Society.

All proceeds go to the club’s outrigger racing activities. Kai Opua Canoe Club is a 501c3 non-profit. Early, discounted entries must be done online by April 14 at kaiopua.org/pauhanaregatta.asp. For more information, call 938-8577.

Pueo Kupuna Softball golf tourney

The Pueo Kupuna Softball Team 7th annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser will be held on April 17 at the Big Island Country Club. Tee Time is 8 a.m., and the play of the day is two man scramble, modified best ball.

LavaKids Family Fun Runs

On April 16, LavaKids, in partnership with Club Rehab, will host its Family Fun Runs at 7 a.m. on Ane Keohokalole Highway between Palani Road and Kealakehe High School. Look for the Lavaman flags on the mauka side of the road. This is a free event and open to all ages.

The guest speaker this month will be Alika Hoomana, who will talk about the importance of fitness.

Registration will take place at 7 a.m. followed by a keiki dash at 7:45 a.m.. The one-mile and 2-mile run/walk will begin at 7:55 a.m. with the 5K run/walk right after. This event is open to both keiki and adults. Games and supervision will be provided for keiki during the 5K for parents wanting to participate.

Hawaii Island Suicide Prevention Benefit Golf Tournament

Hawaii Island Suicide Prevention Benefit Golf Tournament will be held at Makakei Golf Course on April 24.

The format is a two person scramble starting at 9 a.m. with a Shotgun start. Cost is $80 per golfer and includes lunch.

Konawaena Foundation golf tourney

The 11th annual Konawaena Foundation Golf Tournament is slated for May 7 at the newly opened Kona Country Club. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

The golf tournament format is two-person scramble with each person hitting at least six tee shots.

Cost to play is $125 per person and the entry fee includes green fees, cart and great prizes. Applications must be submitted no later than May 1 to the Kona Country Club.

Kai Opua practice schedule

Practice for the regatta season is underway at Kai Opua.

Girls practices are Mondays and Wednesdays, boys practices are on Tuesday and Thursdays. Practice for youth paddlers starts at 4 p.m.

Novice B (first year) Women’s practice starts at 5 p.m. Novice A, Open and Age Division Women’s practice starts at 5:30 p.m. Women’s practices are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Kai ‘Opua Men’s practice are at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays, and at 6 a.m. on Saturdays.
