The Volcano Art Center’s 2016 Hula Kahiko series continues at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with a performance by Halau Hula O Kalaulani O Puuanahulu, under the direction of Kumu Hula Stephanie Naomi Apolo.

At age 4, Apolo took hula from Hula Master George Lanakilakeikiahialii Naope, and danced with him until his retirement. She then danced for other kumu, including Iwalani Kalima, Etua Lopez, Ray Fonseca, Francis Henry Pohukaina “Kaina” Keanaaina, Raylene Haalelea Lancaster, and Hulali Solomon Covington.

In May 2012, she started Halau Hula O Kalaulani O Puuanahulu with seven girls. Since, the halau has grown and today comprises 24 keiki. She also recently started a Lokomaikai class with five girls. Her goal is to be able to teach the manao that she was taught by Uncle George; share the values that were taught by her kupuna of Puuanahulu; allow the girls to experience hula competitions and other memorable events; and travel to share hula.

The free performance is part of a year-round series sponsored by the center. For the series, hula halau from across Hawaii are invited to perform each month in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting at the kahua hula (platform) in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. These performances are presented authentically in an outdoor setting, rain or shine without electronic amplification. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mats.

Held in conjunction with this performance, Kumu Hula Ab Valencia and members of Halau Hula Kalehuakiekieikaiu will share “Na Mea Hula” (all things hula) on the lanai of the Volcano Art Gallery. Participants will learn a hula, use various hula implements and try their hand at lei making.
