Meteorologist to address Kiwanis

Kiwanis Cub of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the upstairs room at Humpy’s in Coconut Grove Marketplace. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited.

The guest speaker is Ed Tomlinson, a visiting Kiwanis member from Monument Hill, Colo. who is chief meteorologist of Atmospheric Science Consultants in Monument, Colo. He will speak on Air Force weather reconnaissance including flying into the eye of typhoons and taking meteorological measurements. He will also talk about weather reconnaissance in Laos over the Ho Chi Minh trail during the Vietnam war and dispersing fog in Alaska, if time allows.

Special Olympics torch run Saturday

Special Olympics West Hawaii athletes and supporters will take to the streets Saturday for the 31st annual Special Olympics West Hawaii Torch Run.

The noncompetitive run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. in front of First Hawaiian Bank and proceeds down Palani Road onto Alii Drive heading south. Turn-around will be at Hale Halawai, and participants will then head north on Alii Drive turning left onto Kuakini Highway and then proceeding to the entrance of the Kona Aquatics Center, where they will be joined by Special Olympics athletes and other walkers to bring the Torch into the opening ceremonies of the Big Island Regional Softball Tournament.

Torch Run opening ceremonies begin at 9:10 a.m.

T-Shirts are available for a $30 donation, made payable to Special Olympics West Hawaii. Registration will be from 7:30-8:15 a.m. in front of the bank.

Lions Club of Kona offers $10K grant

The Lions Club of Kona, in partnership with The Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. is seeking to enable a 501(c)(3) community service provider wishing to serve the poor and needy citizens of West Hawaii, with a grant amount of $10,000.

As an integral part of this partnership, an additional benefit will be 100 community service hours donated to this, or another, community organization, by the Lions Club of Kona members.

The club is interested in supporting initiatives that address the following social concerns: vision or hearing assistance, prevention of homelessness, ailment or disease prevention, domestic violence awareness and prevention, and mental health support.

Deadline for inquiries is May 15.

Earth Day celebration Saturday at Palamanui

Hawaii Community College – Palamanui will host an Earth Day celebration on Saturday. The event is free and open to the public and will feature a variety of events from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The schedule of events is as follows:

• 7:30 a.m.: Work party to remove fountain grass and place mulch. This will prepare the ground for restoration of indigenous and edible plants.

• 9:45 a.m.: Words of wisdom

• 10 a.m.: Speakers and presentations

• Noon: Music and potluck lunch

• 1 p.m.: Extended conversations

• 2:45 p.m.: Mahalo and pau

The school will also celebrate International Firefighters Day, which is May 4, by acknowledging area firefighters. A team will remove invasive plants from the Volunteer Fire Company 7 Bravo station on Kaiminani Drive.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own water bottles, plates and utensils and gardening gloves and tools. Paper plates and cold water will be offered.
