Orchid sale and show coming up

The Kona Orchid Society will hold its annual show and sale at the big pavilion at the Old Kona Airport Park.

The show is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

There will be many orchid and plant vendors, along with several artists, jewelers and craftsmen. Speakers are also scheduled throughout the two-day event.

Rotary Clubs announce upcoming speakers

The Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise will hear from Nestorio Domingo, who has worked as a civilian flight test engineer for the U.S. Air Force and is a member of the Acquisition Workforce under the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics. He will provide an insight of what acquisition workforce engineers do to ensure that expensive weapon systems acquisitions such as the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber and F-22 Raptor Air Superiority Fighter, are provided the capabilities needed to win wars or help maintain peace. Applications accepted for Youth Conservation Corps

Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park is accepting applications for its summer Youth Conservation Corps program. The program provides gainful employment and an educational experience in the conservation of natural and historical heritage. Youth Conservation Corps workers will participate in conservation and preservation related projects park-wide and work with all park divisions.

This year’s program will run from June 13 through July 23. Applicants for crew member positions must be between the ages of 15 and 18 during the term of employment. Enrollees work 40 hours per week and earn $8.50/hour. Applications are due by May 27 and may be obtained at the park.

Senior Roundtable Hui meets

The Senior Roundtable Hui holds a “Vets Memory-Share” during its meeting from 1:30-3 p.m. Wednesday at Pink Mocha Cafe above Home Depot.

The discussion will revolve around memories of military service, friends, and relatives.

The hui is a gathering of seniors, family members, those in the aging industry and anyone interested in aging issues. There is no charge for the meeting other than if purchasing coffee or tea. Parking is easy access and free.

Girl Scouts earn car care badge

Auto Body Hawaii teamed up with Girls Scouts of Hawaii to help them earn their car care badge.

Providing the hands-on presentation was Auto Body Hawaii’s General Manager Dale Matsumoto.

The class is designed to better acquaint the girls with their vehicles’ maintenance needs before they reach driving age. They learned about vehicle safety, basic auto maintenance, and what to do if they are involved in an accident.

Girls attending the event earned a car care badge and a goody bag with other information and gifts from Auto Body Hawaii. The event is open to any registered Girl Scout. Workshop explains how to start a business

A workshop titled “How To Start A Business In Hawaii” will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m Wednesday at Gateway Center, Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.

Dennis Boyd will lead the class. Cost is $20.
