Charity walk coming up

“We’re all in this together,” is the theme for this year’s Charity Walk, May 14 at Waikoloa Beach Resort. The annual 3.1-mile run, walk event was created by the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association in 1978 as a way for the visitor industry to give back to the community. Since then it has grown into a major fundraiser statewide, generating over $28 million in the last 37 years.

Participants of all ages can join for a minimum pledge of $35 for adults, or $25 for those age 18 and younger. Afterward, more than 20 food stands will offer cuisine from area restaurants.

Hawaii Civil Air Patrol completes search and rescue exercise

The Hawaii Wing of the Civil Air Patrol concluded a search and rescue training mission April 23, simulating a large tsunami that resulted in major damage statewide. It was designed to test the statewide capabilities of the Hawaii Wing Civil Air Patrol and its different skills sets.

“We accomplished several integrated but separate tasks in this exercise including the ability to operate large air and ground activities with no advance notice,” said Lt. Col. Anthony Ferrara, CAP Hawaii Wing Incident Commander. “We managed a large scale mission with Kona airport chosen as the incident command location for the statewide activity and everyone else working from remote locations.”

Civil Air Patrol was tasked with conducting aerial surveys of the damage with high resolution digital photography as well as conducting ground searches for several persons. Typically, large scale missions are based at the CAP Hawaii Wing headquarters facility on Oahu, with a full incident command staff. This exercise was designed so as to restrict the ability to assemble a centralized command staff because of infrastructure failures. It relied on a primary staff located in the Kona CAP Squadron building at the Kona International Airport. Specific mission details were not provided to participants in advance.
