Anthony Benevides

Anthony Pacheco Benevides, 93, of Hilo died April 13, 2016, at The Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born Aug. 23, 1922, in Hilo, he was a retired mechanic for the former Hilo Coast Processing Co. and Mauna Kea Sugar Co. He was also a World War II Army veteran and Hawaii Army National Guard veteran and a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. May 5 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. wake service. Friends may also call at 8:30 a.m May 6 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for a 10:30 a.m. Mass. Casual attire and flowers are welcomed. Burial will be at East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2.

He is survived by sons, Sonny (Geneva) Haleamau, Patrick Haleamau. both of Hilo; hanai sons, Anthony (Coleen) Haleamau, Kaohe (Jaylyn) Haleamau, both of Hilo; sister, Fanny (Richard Sr.) Gouveia of Kailua-Kona; eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces.

Larry Toribio

Larry Lazada Toribio, 59, of Papaikou died April 19, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Feb. 25, 1957, in Rizal, Philippines, he was a member of the U.S. Army and a retired parts manager for Sunshine Helicopters.

Friends may call from 8:30-9:30 a.m. May 6 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou for a 10 a.m. Mass. Casual attire; flowers are welcomed. Scattering of ashes will be at a later date.

He is survived by stepmother, Pauline Toribio of Oahu; uncle, Ben Lagat of Papaikou; aunt, Rose Toribio of Papaikou; cousin, Toby (Volanda) Toribio of Hilo; cousin, Jasmine (Jiro) of Kona; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Winifred Hanoa

Winifred Pele Hanoa, 92, of Waiohinu, died April 6, 2016, at home. Born in Punaluu, she was a retired practical nurse with the former Hilo Hospital, served as one of the first Kupuna Consultants for the Hawaii Burial Council, served as Director Emeritus for Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi, was co-founder and president of the Punaluu Preservation and Ka’u Preservation societies and a lifetime member of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Ka’u. She was one of the first State Dept. of Education Kupuna and served as a Hawaiian Cultural Advisor for the University of Hawaii—Hilo, Kamehameha Schools, Ka’u High School, Pahala Elementary, Naalehu Elementary and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. She was a member of the Hoku Loa Henry Opukahaia Congregational Chapel of Punaluu. She received the Governor’s Kilohana Award, Aha Kupuna Award , Papa Ola Lokahi 14th Annual Health Award and was a Hawaii County Outstanding Older American nominee.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. May 7 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.

She is survived by sons, Ralph (Lori) Dedman of Hilo, Pernell (Sophia) Hanoa Sr. of Pahala; daughters, Georgia Dods of Waiohinu, Elsa Dedman of Naalehu; brother, Peter (Doris) Bangay of Honolulu; sister, Elizabeth Bell of Honolulu; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Stanley Otake Sr.

Stanley Masanaga Otake Sr., 74, of Hawi died April 25, 2016, at his home. Born Aug. 13, 1941, in Kahuku, Oahu, he was a ceramic tile setter foreman and member of the Masons union and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kohala.

Friends may call from 10 – 11 a.m. May 7 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kohala for an 11:30 a.m. funeral service. Burial will follow at the Hawi County Cemetery. Flowers are welcome.

He is survived by his wife, Ida Otake of Hawi; son, Stanley (Luisa) Otake Jr., of Oregon; daughters, Ingeborg Akina of Ewa Beach, Oahu, Rebekah (Canton) Soifua of Utah, Ellise (Stanton) Loo of Waimea, Dardenellas (Nicholas) Alaimo of Mililani, Oahu, Helene Otake of California; hanai daughter, Eilee (Rod) Perreira of Waikoloa; brothers, Robert (Patricia) Otake of Honolulu, Richard (Susan) Otake of Idaho, David Otake of Honolulu, James Asari of Kailua, Oahu; sisters, Eleanore Otake of Mililani, Oahu, Elaine Vervisch of Wahiawa, Oahu, Mildred (George) Cabrey of California; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Teddy Martinez

Teddy Maltezo Martinez, 60, of Pahala died April 8, 2016, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Oct. 4, 1955, in Lubnac Vintar, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he worked at a Maui Hotel as a dishwasher.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. May 7 at Pahala Rosary Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Casual attire and flowers are welcomed. Urn burial will be at the Pahala Catholic Church Cemetery.

He is survived by father, Federico Martinez of Pahala; brothers, Vicente (Venice Medrano) Martinez Jr. of Hilo, Danilo Martinez of Okinawa, Japan; sisters, Iluminda (Albert) Domingo of Captain Cook, and Amalia Martinez of Hilo, 11 grandchildren; five nieces and five nephews.

Olimpia Martinez

Olimpia Maltezo Martinez, 87, of Pahala died April 13, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Dec. 18, 1928, in Linomot, Jones, Isabela, Philippines, she was a retired factory worker for the Ka‘u Agribusiness Co. and a member of the Pahala Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. May 7 at the Pahala Holy Rosary Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Casual attire and flowers are welcomed. Burial will follow at Pahala Catholic Church Cemetery.

She is survived by husband, Federico Martinez of Pahala; sons, Vicente (Venice Medrano) Martinez Jr. of Hilo, Danilo Martinez of Okinawa, Japan; daughters, Iluminda (Albert) Domingo of Captain Cook, Amalia Martinez of Hilo; brother, Antonio (Arlene) Maltezo of Pahala; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Ken Imai

Ken Satoru Imai, 55, of Hilo died April 28, 2016, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was employed at Greenpoint Nursery and was the former owner of Lifting Services of Hawaii.

Friends may call at 3:30 p.m. May 9 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 5 p.m. service. The family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by son, Kristopher Imai of Kona; daughters, Kori Imai of Kona, Kimara Imai of Hilo; mother, Vivian Imai of Hilo; hanai son, Oyabun Imai of Hilo; brothers, Keith Imai of Paradise Park, Kelly Imai of Keaau, Kirk (Kelli) Imai of Ainaloa; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Stephanie Shimizu

Stephanie Suzanne Shimizu, 55, of Waimea died May 2, 2016, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born April 20, 1961, in Nashville, Tenn., she was an educational assistant and tutor at Waikoloa Elementary School.

Friends may call from noon to 5 p.m. May 9 at her Waimea home, 64-5183 Kalake St. for a celebration of life. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by husband, Mark Shimizu of Waimea; sister, Melissa (Lowell) Ward of Montana; a nephew and a niece.

Barbara Jean Haili

Barbara Jean Mew Lang Haili, 63, of Pahoa died April 29, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born March 11, 1953, in Hilo, she was a retired manager for The Salvation Army – The Sally Shop in Hilo and a former bus driver for Keeaiki Preschool.

Friends may call at 6 p.m. May 11 at Dodo Mortuary chapel, Hilo for a 7 p.m. service. Cremation to follow. Casual attire.

She is survived by sons, Walthum (Roxane) Haili Jr., Chad (Chantelle) Haili, all of Pahoa, Sheldon (Marie) Haili of Hilo; daughter, Gerlyn (Louie) Solis of Pahoa; hanai daughters, Jodie Aiona of Hilo, Erica (Jeffrey) Menzsa of Mountain View; hanai mother, Sophie Aiona of Pahoa; brothers, Charles Aiona Jr. of Hilo, Edward (Anna) Aiona of Mountain View; sisters, Idalyn Isom of Louisville, Ky., Ella (Orlando) Manuel of Paradise Park; hanai sisters, Laverne (Dean) Hess, Judy Aiona, Shawn Aiona, all of Pahoa; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorsey Ito

Dorsey Tomiyoshi Ito, 78, Captain Cook died April 3, 2016, at the family’s residence. Born Oct. 11, 1937, in Kealakekua, he was an assistant vice president for Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank of California, a computer operator for GloreForgan, Wm. R. Staats and a computer operations manager for All State Savings and Loan, and Sears Savings Bank. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Private services were held.

He is survived by his sister, Kay Uejio of Cypress, Calif.; caregiver, Byron Ito of Captain Cook; five nephews, 1 niece; numerous cousins.
