TMT representative discusses observatory design

Warren Skidmore will describe how the Thirty Meter Telescope design was developed to support a broad range of observing capabilities and how the observatory is being engineered. He’ll discuss some of the observational capabilities TMT will provide and some of the areas of study that will benefit from the TMT’s capabilities.

The talk is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center in the Council Chambers. It is free.

Skidmore has been employed with the TMT project for nearly 14 years in many capacities.

Hawaii Technology Academy hosts learning exhibition

Hawaii Technology Academy hosts its third annual Kona Learning Exhibition from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay Convention Center.

The public is invited to help HTA celebrate a year of blended learning. HTA students in grades K-12 will showcase their community service, science projects and extracurricular activities.

Hawaii Technology Academy is a statewide public charter school. Its blended learning model empowers students to succeed through face-to-face instruction, virtual instruction and independent learning.

Beginner computer class offered to seniors

Elderly Recreation Services is offering a beginner computer class from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, May 11 through June 8 at West Hawaii Civic Center. The session is tailored to students who have little to no computer experience and is open to anyone age 55 and older.

Attendees will learn basic computer skills including using Microsoft Word, Excel, the Internet and setting up email accounts.

Class size is limited and advance registration for the five available slots is required. Cost is $10 and can be paid in advance at West Hawaii Civic Center or to the instructor on the first day of class.

Harry McKee Foundation scholarships honor Ka’u students

The Harry McKee Scholarship Foundation recently awarded five Ka’u students with $1,000 scholarships for the 2016–17 school year.

Students receiving a $1,000 scholarship are Monica Corvarrubio, Sheilla Felipe and Mahealani Enos, all seniors at Ka’u High School, Bernadette Cagampang, a Konawaena High School senior, and Kaweni Ibarra, a Ka’u High School graduate who now attends California State University Sacramento.

The McKee Scholarship Foundation is based in Ocean View, and is managed by a volunteer board of directors, who strive to carry on McKee’s legacy of providing students with higher education opportunities.

Life in combat zones discussed

American Legion Kona Post 20 meets Wednesday at the Kona Elks Lodge, across Kuakini Highway from Big Island Honda.

The guest speaker is Readiness NCO, Sgt. 1st Class Bernard Garcia, who will talk about life in combat zones and what is happening in the Hawaii Army National Guard. He is assigned to Hawaii Army National Guard in the Kealakekua Armory.

Fellowship and socialization is at 3:30 p.m., and the meeting starts at 4 p.m. Dinner is at 5 p.m.
