Free skin cancer screenings Tuesday

Dr. Monica Scheel Dermatology will offer free skin cancer screenings from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday in recognition of Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month.

No appointment is necessary and the screenings are appropriate for all ages and skin types. Participants should wear loose clothing. A spot check will be conducted by a dermatology professional and participants will be able to see UV damage in a skin scope, learn how to protect their skin and find out about the danger signs of skin cancer. Free sunscreen and snacks will be provided.

• Thursday, 5:30 to 7 p.m.: A talk on skin cancer and prevention by Marné CarMichael Walsh at Tutu’s House in Waimea

• Sunday, 8 a.m. to noon: Free senior screening at North Hawaii Community Hospital

• May 19, 6:30 to 8 p.m: Skin cancer and prevention talk by Scheel sponsored by Kona Community Hospital at West Hawaii Civic Center

VFW schedule announced

VFW Post 12122, behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, will host several events this week.

SUDS/MUDS — Soldiers and Marines Undertaking Disabled Scuba — arrive on island for scuba diving and associated activities. Funds raised through the Mauna Lani Christmas tree decoration contest support this program. A potluck will be held for them at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Pasta with salad and dessert will be served from 5 – 7 p.m. Friday for $5.

The VFW will hold its monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with installation of newly elected officers, Pat Pastor, commander; Dale Ross, senior vice commander; Wayne Gray, junior vice commander; Bob Vergano, quartermaster; and Jody Brissette, one-year trustee.

The VFW Auxiliary will meet at 12:30 p.m Saturday.

Meditation class offered to seniors

Elderly Recreation Services will offer a 10-week course on meditation with Sifu Wayne Chenault beginning Tuesday, and continuing from 9-10 a.m. Tuesdays through July 12.

The course will include deep meditation, crystal Buddha meditation and chi kung slow walking meditation. It is open to anyone age 55 and older and will be held at St. Benedict’s Church, also called the Painted Church, in Honaunau. Cost for the 10-week program is $10.

Brain Injury Support group meets

The Brain Injury Support group meets from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Rehab Services, just mauka of Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Road.

Jenny Hulen will discuss craniaosacral therapy, which is a form of bodywork or alternative therapy using touch to manipulate the cranial sutures or skull bones.

Kiwanis meets Wednesday

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Humpy’s upstairs room in Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited.

Speakers will be Toni Symons and Anthony Sawis from the Na Kahua Hale O Ulu Wini transitional and low-income housing project.

Seniors plan beach day

Kailua-Kona Seniors meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Pavilion 3 at Old Kona Airport Park. This pavilion is handicapped accessible.

Plan to play board games and to enjoy the ocean. May birthdays will be celebrated. Attendees should bring a chair and brown bag lunch. Chairpersons are Claire Inman and Francie Faust. There will be no meeting at Hale Halawai this week.

SKEA offers hatha yoga

Society for Kona’s Education and Art in Honaunau offers a hatha yoga class from 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesdays.

Filiz Uestuen guides participants through the poses and breathing, and ending with a period of meditation and deep relaxation. Cost is $12 per class or $46 per month.

Yoga class offered in Captain Cook

Gentle yoga flow is offered from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Aug. 2 at Yano Hall in Captain Cook.

The class is for all ability levels. It offers total body stretch and ends with meditation. It is offered by donation.

Dance class offered for Parkinson’s patients

A free dance class for Parkinson’s patients continues from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Wednesday and May 18 at Hale Halawai, 76-6224 Alii Drive.

No dance experience is necessary and all levels and can start any time in the series. The class is taught by Marie Snyder, who is a Wertheimer Fellow of Dance for PD.

Kamehameha birth stories told

Fred Cachola will be the guest speaker at the Daughters of Hawaii and Calabash Cousins meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hulihee Palace.

His topic will be Kamehameha’s birth stories of Kohala.
