Hawaii Island was recently ranked No. 4 of the top 10 islands in the U.S. by TripAdvisor.

Also known as the “Big Island,” Hawaii Island is home to volcanoes, waterfalls and beaches, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, TripAdvisor said. Rising almost 14,000 feet above sea level, Mauna Kea entices travelers with breathtaking views of the island’s unique landscape.

TripAdvisor, the travel planning and booking site, in April announced the winners of its Travelers’ Choice awards for islands. Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions on islands worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period, as well as traveler booking interest on TripAdvisor.

Ahead of the Big Island were Maui (No. 1), Key West, Florida (No. 2), and Oahu (No. 3). Maui was also ranked the No. 1 in the world, and was the only island in the U.S. to make the top 10 beaches in the world list.

Behind Hawaii’s southern-most island were Mount Desert Island, Maine (No. 5); Hilton Head, South Carolina (No. 6); Amelia Island, Florida (No. 7); Marco Island, Florida (No. 8); Chincoteague Island, Virginia (No. 9); and Mackinac Island, Michigan (No. 10).
