Police Week honors fallen officers
Police Week, which is today through Saturday, is a time the nation recognizes officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed every May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
The public is invited to a Police Week ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Kona police station. Police will pay tribute to Officer Manuel Cadinha, who gave his life in 1918, Officer William “Red” Oili, who gave his life in 1936, Officer Ronald “Shige” Jitchaku, who gave his life in 1990, and Officer Kenneth Keliipio, who gave his life in 1997.
Also during Police Week, station tours for all districts will be offered. Call Officer Jason Grouns at 961-3066 to schedule an appointment.
Chamber networking event planned
The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce invites the public to its monthly networking event, AfterHours, which takes place from 5-7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.
On Wednesday, the event is hosted by West Hawaii Community Health Center above Kealakehe High School at 74-5214 Keanalehu Drive.
Pupu and refreshments will be served. General admission cost is $30; $15 for Chamber members and first-time nonmembers. Registration is required. Register at kona-kohala.com.

New stroke survivor support group forms
A second stroke survivor support group is forming and will be led by Kevin Rhinehart, stroke survivor and triathlete, on the third Wednesday of each month.
The first meeting will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the office of Dr. Marko Reumann, MD, 75-5995 Kuakini Highway Suite 445. Those with Aphasia and other speech impairments are encourage to attend. The group is free.
The first stroke survivor support group continues on the first Tuesday of the month from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Life Care Center, 78-6957 Kamehameha III Road.
Free Medicare presentation planned
The public is invited to the fifth in a series of six free presentations titled “Advantage Plans: Marketing Abuses/What to be Aware of.”
These talks are given by the Kona volunteers for Senior Medicare Patrol, in partnership with Regency at Hualalai.
Attendees will learn how to protect themselves from Medical ID theft, fraud and scams. They will also learn to understand the basics of Medicare and Advantage Plans, learn how to check their statements for errors and suspicious billing, and report possible fraud.
The talk is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Regency at Hualalai, 75-181 Hualalai Road.

Free skin cancer lecture planned
The Kona Hospital Foundation will hold its bimonthly Informal Lecture Series from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Community Meeting Hale, Building G at the West Hawaii Civic Center. The lecture is free.
Because May is Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month, the foundation will host dermatologist Monica Scheel, and Tricia Achay. The will discuss what everyone should know about skin cancer including what to look for on your skin and how to prevent problems from arising. There will be time for questions and answers.

Auntie’s Angels seeks canned goods for seniors
Auntie’s Angels – Big Island will hold its monthly Soup Kitchen ‘n’ Pantry on Saturday, May 21 for the seniors at Hualalai Elderly Housing. The charity seeks donations of canned goods, fresh fruit and vegetables to share with kupuna. This event will also honor and celebrate the women of Hualalai. Lale Kam and Friends will entertain with ukulele and hula.
