Nonprofits encouraged to apply for community award
Bank of Hawaii Foundation is accepting nominations and applications for the 2016 Bank of Hawaii Foundation Monty Richards Hawaii Island Community Award. Hawaii County nonprofit organizations are invited to apply by July 5. The award provides one or more grants up to $30,000. Nominations may be made by the public or by the 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations themselves.
The award was established in 2008 in honor of Herbert “Monty” Montague Richards, Jr., former president and general manager of Kahua Ranch and lifetime community volunteer.
Bank of Hawaii Foundation is particularly interested in programs in the areas of arts, culture and education that will benefit residents of Hawaii County, including low- to moderate-income youth and their families.

Volunteers sought to protect Kahaluu
The Kohala Center’s Kahaluu Bay Education Center is seeking volunteers who want to help protect Kahaluu Bay and its coral reefs, fish and turtles.
ReefTeach volunteers teach visitors proper reef etiquette and help them identify fish, turtles, and invertebrates in the bay.
Citizen Science volunteers monitor and track environmental conditions at Kahaluu Bay by collecting weekly samples at specific sites. The data help track the health of the bay, understand how events such as algae blooms impact water quality and the bay’s overall health, and act to correct any problems before they impact the ecosystem. No previous experience or scientific knowledge is required. Training is provided.

AdvoCats meeting coming up
AdvoCats will hold a general meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kona Vistas community center on the corner of Pualani and Lako streets. The meeting agenda includes planning a garage sale June 18, and a spay and neuter clinic June 22 and Fourth of July parade participation.
Those with cats that need to be trapped, spayed or neutered and returned or have items to donate or want to volunteer may call 327-3724 or visit advocatshawaii.org. Also, the group collects ink cartridges for recycling. HI-5 refunds may be donated to AdvoCats at Atlas Recycling.
AdvoCats is a county endorsed nonprofit trap-neuter-return organization, committed to solving the homeless cat problem in a humane way.
Lions Club plans food drive
The Lions Club of Kona, in partnership with The Hawaii Island Food Basket, will conduct a food drive on Saturday.
Lions Club of Kona members will collect nonperishable food from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at KTA Superstores in Keauhou Shopping Center and at Sack N Save in Lanihau Shopping Center. Some popular food items requested are canned meat, canned meals, canned soup, canned vegetables and canned fruit. Expired food will not be accepted.
The Lions Club of Kona has 59 members and meets 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at Teshima’s Restaurant .

Community Seed Library presentation set
The Community Seed Library offers a presentation by Calley O’Neill from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kailua-Kona Public Library. The program will present the preliminary conceptual plan to create a living laboratory for learning, restoring the forest and growing food at Hawaii Community College at Palamanui.
Donations of gardening tools and hoses will be accepted.
