DUI arrests rise, major accidents fall

Hawaii Police arrested 36 people on charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicant between May 9 and Sunday. Twelve were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than age 21.

The number of arrests has increased 16.8 percent over the same period last year, from 364 to 425.

The number of major accidents has dropped 6.3 percent over the same period last year, with 538 in 2016 and 574 2015.

There have been nine fatal accidents so far this year, one of which resulted in multiple deaths. Last year saw six fatal crashes with nine fatalities. This shows a 50 percent increase in crashes and 11.1 percent in fatalities.
