Kailua-Kona Seniors to attend movie day

The Kailua-Kona Seniors will attend a free movie at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 25 at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building A. The movie, “The Lady in the Van,” is open to all seniors.

Kailua-Kona seniors will not meet at Hale Halawai that week.

Buddhist talk, fire ceremony planned

Tulku Yeshi Rinoche, founder of Tibetan Zen and a Tibetan Buddhist master, is offering a talk and traditional fire ceremony at Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary.

The talk on the origins Buddhism in Tibet is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and the fire ceremony is from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday. Cost is $20 per activity or $30 for both.

Previous experience with Buddhism is not required. Both events will be held at Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary, 83-5401 Painted Church Road, Captain Cook.

Support offered for parents who have lost a child

Helping Parents Heal Kona Chapter, will meet from 4 to 6 p.m. May 28 at Kona Community Hospital, Conference Room 2.

Developed for parents who have lost a child, the workshops are for anyone who has experienced loss.

Speaker and facilitator Elizabeth Theriault will discuss changes in how we move through ritual, ceremony and ways to connect with the physical absence of a loved one.

AARP Smart Driver class planned

An AARP Smart Driver class is offered at 1 p.m May 30 at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive.

This class is geared toward the older driver. It does not include driving or written tests, only informative quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eye sight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, and problems at intersections.

Participants may receive a discount on their insurance.
