One of the most popular fairy tales of all time, “Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs” has captured the hearts of adults and children alike since Walt Disney introduced the film version in 1937.
On Monday, at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea, West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy presents, “Snow WhiteBallet.” A handsome prince, an evil queen, a lovely princess and seven lovable, but dysfunctional dwarfs, bring to life an enchanting tale of love and magic.
“This is an original production,” said WHDTA Artistic Director Virginia Holte. “We picked Snow White because we asked our students, who are juniors and seniors in high school, to pick the ballet. It’s been really fun to put together.”
Story ballet has made a comeback in recent years, which allows for performances such as Snow White, which have no significant precedent or foundation, to unfold and be created from the ground up. It’s an opportunity for audiences to witness how contemporary choreographers put their spin on the popular Grimm’s fairy tale.
Snow White is a favorite classic filled with jealousy, love, friendship, and the obsession with physical beauty. It teaches us valuable life lessons about the devastating effects of jealousy, and the gift of true friendship which is based on inner beauty — all topics still relevant in today’s world. It’s filled with strong emotions that lend themselves perfectly to the performing arts, and give choreographers and performers the perfect material to work with.
“We are using original music as well as famous composers,” said Holte. “Megumi Kopp will accompany the dancers on piano.”
Known for her kindness and optimism, Snow White charms the forest animals, the dwarfs, and the prince alike. Considered the “Fairest of All,” Snow White’s real beauty lies in her kind heart and honest nature. The story is filled with magic, an evil stepmother, a handsome prince, cute forest creatures, comedic Dwarves and, of course, a happy ending.
“This is a ballet for the whole family,” said Holte. “It’s a really cute story. It’s inspiring, with contemporary dance, and lovely costumes. It’s a feast for the eyes. It’s going to be a fun, beautiful, family oriented ballet.”
