VFW schedule announced

VFW Post 12122 behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street has several events planned.

Onion burgers will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday with salad and dessert for $5.

On Saturday, the post will participate in recycle cleanup at the Honu race at Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii.

An activities meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m Tuesday.

The VFW state convention is planned from June 9-11 in Honolulu.

Pasta will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 10 with salad and dessert for $5.

Hike offered along Palamanui Trail

E Mau Na Ala Hele will celebrate National Trails Day on Sunday with a hike along the Palamanui Trail. Hikers will meet at 4 p.m. at the bus stop in front of the Palamanui campus, shuttle mauka and walk back down about 2 miles along the trail, finishing around sunset.

Richard Stevens, historian and lecturer, will lead the way, pointing out features along the historic trail.

Participants should have sun protection, water, closed-toe shoes, with long pants recommended. Bring gloves for clearing invasive fountain grass and haole koa. Small picks or pruning saws may also be useful.

The hike is free and limited to the first 35 people who register.
