Conquer the math monster

Hawaii Community College – Palamanui hosting free workshops designed to help anyone who has trouble conquering the “math monster.”

Many current or incoming students have a fear of math that prevents them from pursuing and attaining the degree or certificate they are seeking. The workshop, titled “Slaying the Mental Math Monster for Good,” is designed to help them overcome their fears and frustrations and get on the path to success.

Participants can choose to attend one of the following sessions at the new North Kona campus:

• From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. or 5:30 to 6:30 Wednesday

• From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. or 5:30 to 6:30 June 21

The workshops will be held in the Palamanui Campus Library Computer Lab and are free and open to the public. Reservations are requested.

Summer baking class planned

Hawaii Community College – Palamanui offers an Introduction to Yeast Breads course that will teach participants to make yeast breads from scratch using homemade sourdough starter.

Participants will use the brand new baking kitchens at the campus as they learn to make baguettes, pizza, brioche, bagels, and more.

The course will be taught by baking chef instructor Mark Johnson, who was trained at Le Cordon Bleu. The three-week course is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays June 7 through June 23. It is offered through Hawaii Community Colleges’s Office of Continuing Education and Training.

Tuition for the 24 hours of professional baking instruction is $225 and enrollment is limited. Registration is on a first come, first served basis and can at www.ocethawcc.org or by calling 934-2700.

Degree preparation workshops planned

The University Center West Hawaii will host two degree preparation workshops from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and June 22 at the new Hawaii Community College – Palamanui campus, Koali Building A 101.

The University Center, West Hawaii delivers more than 50 degree and certificate programs from across the 10-campus University of Hawaii system through distance learning technology. At the workshop, students can learn what degrees are offered in West Hawaii, the necessary steps to move forward, key deadlines, methods of program delivery and what it takes to be a successful distance learning student.

Dengue, Zika meeting planned at library

Karen Anderson will speak on dengue fever and the Zika virus from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kailua-Kona Public Library. Attendees will learn what they can do to prevent mosquito borne viruses in the community.

Chair yoga class offered

A chair yoga class will be offered from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Yano Hall in Kealakekua. The class is free; donations will be accepted.

Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga practiced sitting on a chair or standing using a chair for support. Benefits include reduced stress, improved strength, flexibility and brain health. Gentle movements are designed to relieve back, shoulder and neck pain, restore digestive flow and improve circulation.

Business Networking International hosts LegalShield rep

Warren Chong, an independent representative with LegalShield, will be the guest speaker at the Kona Krew Chapter for Business Networking International.

Chong will share 101 reasons to offer LegalShield and identity theft benefits to employees. The event is from 7:45 to 9:15 a.m. at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, Conference Room No. 6. Visitors are welcome, and there is no fee.

Konawaena grad makes college dean’s list

Randall Leslie Berdon Jr. of Kealakekua was named to the dean’s list at the University Of Iowa with a GPA of 3.63. He is a senior majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in math. A 2012 graduate of Konawaena High School, his parents are Randall Sr. and Candida Berdon.
