Toshihiko Asakawa

Toshihiko “Chic” Asakawa, 89, of Hilo died May 28, 2016, at the Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born Jan. 16, 1927, in Pahoa, he was a World War II and Korean War veteran. He was a retired structural building inspector and a member of the Higashi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple.

Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. June 8 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10:30 a.m. service. Burial will follow at the East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 in Hilo. Casual attire is requested.

He is survived by wife, Hanayo Asakawa of Hilo; sons, Robert (Virginia) Asakawa of Ewa Beach, Oahu, Ralph Asakawa of Hilo; grandchildren, Erika Asakawa of Ewa Beach, Oahu; Bobby Asakawa of Ewa Beach, Oahu; cousins, Paul (Alice) Kudo of Pearl City, Oahu; Kenneth (Minerva) Kudo of Ainaloa; numerous nephews and nieces.

Rose Martines-Olsen

Rose Maulili “Leilani” Martines-Olsen, 76, of Keaau died May 20, 2016, at her home. Born May 20, 1940, in Ka’u, she retired as a cook.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. June 11 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hilo for an 11 a.m. service with refreshments to follow.

She is survived by husband, Leland Olsen of Keaau; sons, Ashley Silva of Kurtistown, Randy Olsen of Utah; Douglas (Cara) Olsen of Hilo; daughters, Bernadette (Carlos) Navor of Kurtistown, Debbie (Larry) Sanich, Kellie (Mike) Jones, both of Utah; brothers, Juan (Victoria) Martines of Mountain View, Sabino (Jimmie) Martines of Oregon; sister, Mary (Bill) Cachero of Hawaiian Beaches; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hyland Char Jr.

Hyland Henry Char Jr., 70, died May 4, 2016. Born Oct. 25, 1945, in Honolulu, he was an Army veteran and served as a law enforcement officer with county, state and federal agencies.

He is survived by wife, Donna Char; daughters, Melyssa Char; stepsons, James (Rhonda) Helbing; sisters, Faith Yuk Lan (Kenneth) Saito, Wendy Yuk May (Patrick) Calizar, Violet Yuk Han (Frank) Medeiros; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rose Glancy

Rose Leilani Glancy, 79, of Pahoa died May 20, 2016, at home. She was born Oct. 22, 1936, in Honolulu.

Private services will be held at a later date.

She survived by sons, Robert Kalua and Rodney Kalua of Pahoa, James Glancy of Kailua, Oahu; daughters, Sandra Ferreira of Kaneohe, Oahu, Holly Reiplinger of Honolulu, Rose Faleafine and Sonya Glancy, both of Anchorage, Alaska; brothers, Emil Kruse and Robert Kruse, both of the mainland; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dennis Nakano

Dennis Nakano, 71, of Hilo died May 11, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born March 2, 1945, in Honolulu, he retired as a painter.
