Senior ID card event canceled
Senior ID cards will not be issued Monday at the Kohala Coordinated Services of the Elderly as previously reported. The event is canceled.
Kiwanis Club meets Wednesday
Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the upstairs room of Humpy’s in Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive. All visiting Kiwanis and prospective members are invited. The speaker will be Candee L. Ellsworth, Executive Director of Friends of NELHA.
Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

AARP seeks nominations for service award
AARP Hawaii is seeking nominations for the 2016 Andrus Award for Community Service, which honors volunteers who share their experience, talent, and skills in the community. The application deadline is June 30. Applications may be submitted at http://bit.ly/1TpQ1MF.
The award honors AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus, whose motto “to serve, not to be served” lives on 56 years after she founded AARP to help older Americans age with dignity and purpose.
Nominations are open for any Hawaii volunteer age 50 or older – not just AARP members.
The screening of nominees considers a range of criteria, including positive impact on the lives of individuals age 50 or older and improvement of the community in which the work was done.
Andrus Award nominees must meet the following eligibility guidelines:
Nominee must be 50 years or older.
The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must have been performed on a volunteer basis, without pay.
The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must reflect AARP’s vision and mission.
Korean War veterans meet
The Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 meets at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Kona Vet Center, 73-4876 Kamanu St. in the Kaloko Industrial Area. The Kona Vet Center is located on the second floor in Suite 207. There is an elevator for those who need one.
Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in any of the Armed Forces of the United States, that was within Korea including territorial waters and airspace at Sept. 3, 1945, to the present, or service was outside of Korea June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.

Scholarships available for science camps
Science Camps of America is back for another summer and the Pauahi Foundation wants to help Hawaii Island students get to camp. The initial deadline to apply for a full scholarship has been extended to June 13. The 10-day overnight camp gives teens entering grades 8 through 12 the opportunity to explore the environmental diversity that Hawaii Island has to offer from beaches to rainforests and mountaintops.
Camp home base is at the Pahala Plantation Cottages in Ka’u. Some of the destinations include Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Imiloa Astronomy Center, Mauna Kea Visitor Center, Mauna Loa Climate Observatory, Punaluu Black Sand Beach and many more.
The first camp session, Land and Sea, will be held June 29 to July 8 and focus on Hawaii’s ocean, forests, mountains and volcanoes.
The second session, Air and Space, will be held July 9-18 and focus on astronomy, space exploration and climate.
The Pauahi Foundation scholarship is for Hawaii Island residents ages 13 to 17. Preference is given to those of Native Hawaiian ancestry. To apply, visit pauahi.org/scholarships/science-camps-of-america/.
