Horseshoe Club wraps up 2nd league of 2016
The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club completed its 2nd league of the 2016 season on May 19. The team of Nalani Kukua and Rudy Mockchew took first place with a record of 13-8. The club will start 3rd league play on June 16 at the Kona Palms Courts behind the tennis courts at Old Airport Park.
Membership is required for this approximately eight to ten week sanctioned doubles league. New or returning players will be paired whenever possible. Handicap scoring is used enabling players of all levels to participate. League play is from 4-6 p.m. Thursdays with a weekly fee of $5. For more information call Reg at 756-8085.
The club offers free informal play from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays at Kona Palms Courts. Also, come down to the horseshoe courts on Thursday evenings from 4-6 p.m. to meet some of the players. Pitchers of all levels are welcome. For more information call Al at 322-7085.

Hapuna Roughwater Swim
The Hapuna Roughwater swim will take place on June 18 at 8 a.m. To register for the 1-mile race, go to FLPregister.com/178. There is discounted pricing for early sign-up.
There will be a 400-meter keiki swim race, followed by main event. T-shirts with sign-up guaranteed through June 4 registration. Water patrol volunteers are still needed. Contact Ed Doherty with any questions at Eddoherty1@me.com.
King’s Swim
Kona Aquatics will be hosting the 22nd Annual King’s Swim — a 1.2-mile course which begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay, directly in front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel on July 4 at 8 a.m. No wetsuits or fins permitted; only USA Swimming approved suits permitted.
Applications are available at Bikeworks. A non-refundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application. Registration deadline is June 27. Late registration is at Kailua Pier on race day from 6:30-7:30 a.m. at $20 per entry.
Volunteers with kayaks, surfboards, or stand-up paddle boards wishing to join our safely patrol are welcome; please report to the pier before 7:30 a.m. For more information call Steve Borowski at 334-0083.
First Tee program
First Tee is currently taking enrollment for Summer fun.
The top three reasons young people like being in the First Tee program include: Building relationships, improving golf skills and having fun.
Summer Camp at Waikoloa Village Golf Course, Kona Country Club and Kamehameha Park.

Krispy Cream Donut Dash
The Krispy Kreme Donut Dash, sponsoring by Kuleana Education, will take place on June 4. The event starts at 8 a.m. just below Kealakehe High School at the intersection of Ane Keohokaloke and Puohulihuli and will cost $20.
There will be a 5K Donut Dash run/walk as well as a half mile keiki dash with an entry fee of $10. Awards will be given.
Keiki Summer Tennis/Sports Camp
The Hilton Waikoloa will host a tennis/sports camp throughout the summer for young players ages 6-16.
Camps will take place June 6-10, 13-17, 20-24, June 27-July 1, July 11-15, 18-22 and 25-29. Camps, which will accept all skill levels from beginners to junior competition level, will go Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp will also included swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding and mini-golf.

Mega Sports Camp
Mega Sports camp will take place June 20-24 at Ho’oko Park from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. Mega Sports Camp is a faith-based weeklong camp that will focus on instruction and character building in basketball, soccer, cheer, dance and baseball.

Joe Maher, a long time Detroit Tigers fan and baseball historian, talks about the history of the Negro League, Jackie Robinson and the integration of Afro American and persons of all colors into MLB over the years on the field and in the front offices.
Emily also talks about Ellen Hill Zeringue, the first woman and African American to serve as the Detroit Tigers VP of Marketing. She has created multi cultural marketing including a popular twitter account @tigresdetroit and responsible for the launch of the successful “Who’s your Tiger? campaign which serves as the Tiger’s current marketing slogan.
