Probably no one person in Hawaii knows more about the horse than Parker Ranch’s long-serving veterinarian (and historian and author), Billy Bergin. He and his son, veterinarian Dr. Brady Bergin, have co-authored “The Hawaiian Horse,” to be published by UH Press in early 2017.
From 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Hilo’s Lyman Museum, the Bergins will preview the book, covering the introduction of the various equine species to Hawaii in 1803 through their present-day roles in the islands, from draft animal, plantation and ranch stock, to government, sports, cavalry, and pleasure uses.
The nationally accredited and Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum showcases the natural and cultural history of Hawaii. It is located at 276 Haili St. and is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Admission to Monday’s program is free to museum members, $3 for nonmembers. Space is limited; first come, first seated.
