Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant between June 6 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 504 DUI arrests compared with 456 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.5 percent. Some 39 percent of those arrests, or 197, were made in the Kona District.

During the week, Kona officers arrested 11 motorists while Hilo officers arrested four. South Kohala officers arrested two motorists while officers in North Kohala, Puna and Hamakua arrested one driver in each district.

There have been 650 major accidents so far this year compared with 682 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes on Hawaii Island resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with eight fatal crashes resulting in 11 fatalities during the same period last year.
