Community garage sale this weekend

The Villages of Laiopua Homestead Association is hosting a community wide garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The association is across the street from Kealakehe High School.

Aloha Quilters of Kona meets

The monthly meeting of Aloha Quilters of Kona begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Living Stones Church at Pine Trees Plaza, 73-4040 Hulikoa Drive in Kailua-Kona, next to Matsuyama Market.

Aloha Quilters of Kona is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. The group meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting. New members, novice quilters or “old hands” are welcome.

Nursing scholarship deadline extended

The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary announced a second round of available nursing scholarships. Scholarship amounts this year are $2,000 each and open to any first- or second-year nursing student who is not already an RN.

Application deadline is July 15. Applicants must be Big Island residents. Preference is given to those who live in West Hawaii, from North Kohala south to Ka’u

Kona Historical Society Store Museum closes for exhibit preparation

The H.N. Greenwell Store Museum in Kealakekua is closing its doors June 17 for a couple of weeks as the Kona Historical Society prepares for a special exhibit.

“Kona Ranching &Kona Cowboys: Our Way of Life” will open to the public July 12 and run through July 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, in the H.N. Greenwell Store Museum. This exhibit is part two of a culmination project that shares Kona’s history of cowboys and ranching. The exhibit will feature homestead life, families and tools, giving an intimate look into the people, traditions and ties that remain vital and strong in Kona, now more than two centuries after cattle and horses first landed here.

Admission to the ranching exhibit is by donation.
