Pet adoption event Saturday

Hawaii Island Humane Society will host the third annual Mobile Adoption Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in at ChoiceMart in the Kealakekua Ranch Center in Captain Cook. Adoptions will be offered at discounted rates of $40 per dog and $10 per cat. The event also includes a pet kissing booth and humane education for keiki.

Camp Tarawa Detachment plans barbecue

The Camp Tarawa Detachment No. 1255 of the Marine Corps League invites members of the military past or present and their guests to an annual potluck barbecue June 25 at Spencer Beach Park. Also invited is anyone who is interested in military history, especially that of Hawaii Island during World War II.

This social gathering, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will provide an opportunity for the community to learn about the detachment’s mission to keep alive the history of Camp Tarawa.

The detachment will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, condiments, water and paper products. Attendees should bring their own beverage and an appetizer, salad, side dish or dessert to share.

Mayoral candidate forum slated

Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Community Enterprises, will host a Hawaii County’s mayoral candidate forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Kealakehe High School cafeteria. The West Hawaii forum is free and open to the public. Sherry Bracken of Mahalo Multimedia will moderate the forum.

Youth cooking camps planned

The Kona VFW Auxiliary will conduct cooking camps from noon to 3 p.m. June 26 and 27.

The camps are for ages 6-18 and will take place in the post’s commercial kitchen. The hands-on instruction includes all materials. Participants eat what they make and receive take home recipes.

June 26 menu preparation will be sandal sandwiches and sushi cookies. The June 27 session will be chicken nuggets and a palm tree fruit tray. The cost for each session is $30 per person with proceeds benefiting the Auxiliary’s veterans programs.

Luncheon celebrates Real Women creative writing contest winners

The public is invited to a luncheon award ceremony honoring essay winners in the Real Women creative writing competition.

The luncheon is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 26 at Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort.

Cost for buffet lunch is $35 for adults and $24 for children between the ages of 5-12. Payment must be received by Wednesday and can be sent by mail or made in person at the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney at 655 Kilauea Avenue in Hilo.

The contest is sponsored by the Hawaii County Committee on the Status of Women and was open to students in grades 5-12 from public and private schools. Students will read their winning essays during the award ceremony.

Contestants looked at the lives of women they knew in their family or in their community and saw the many ways in which these women contributed to our shared history.
