Korean community honors veterans

The Korean community is hosting a gathering to express their gratitude to servicemen and women who served in the Korean War. This includes people in all branches of the service who served from June 25, 1960, during the hostilities and all personnel who served thereafter in Korea to keep it free.

The event is at 4 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Community Church, 76 4295 Leilani St. Planned activities include expressions of the Korean people’s gratitude and a meal, followed by a demonstration of Korean dances, songs, and clips of Korea.

Summer Car Show Saturday

The 2016 Transmission Technology Summer Car Show &Fitness Expo is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the baseball field at Old Kona Airport Park.

Trophies will be awarded in 12 judged classes: hot rods, classics, muscle cars, Volkswagens, Asian imports, Euro imports, 4x4s, low riders, sports cars, mud trucks, motorcycles and race cars. More than 200 cars, trucks and motorcycles are expected to be in competition.

All proceeds from participant entry fees will go to Teach for America.

The Fitness Expo will be presented on the main stage at noon and feature award winning bodybuilder Donna McGinn, area champions Danny DeJesus, Gerald Saragosa and others competing for trophies.

Also featured will be two Zumba sessions, a tug-of-war between Big Island firefighters and police and the thunder of raiko drums. A huge bounce castle will be available free for the keiki all day.

More than 40 vendors will offer food, local crafts and products.

The event is free, but donations to the Hawaii Island Food Basket are encouraged. Those making donations, cash or non-perishable foods, will receive drawing tickets for giveways that will go on during the five-hour event.

Woodturners meet Saturday

West Hawaii Woodturners meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pac Glass building. Attendees should bring a lunch and chair, their challenge piece and a show and tell.

Jack Mise will demonstrate band sawn vessels. Visitors are welcome.
