NARFE picnic planned

All active and retired federal employees are invited to the seventh annual picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 7 at Kailua Beach Park, also know as Old Kona Airport Park, Pavilion No. 3.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, salads, desserts and drinks will be served for $6 per person. Attendees are invited to bring a friend or family and a favorite dish to share if they want to.

Make reservations by Friday.

Website provides candidate, election information

The League of Women Voters of Hawaii County has launched a nonpartisan election resource www.VOTE411.org. VOTE411.org provides candidate information, voter registration tools, polling place locations and other helpful Election Day information.

Detailed candidate information, including candidates’ direct responses to issue-related questions, is available for offices at the county, state and national levels. Users can visit www.VOTE411.org and enter their address to find information from the candidates they will see on their ballot.

The League of Women Voters urges people to become familiar with the candidates and to vote in the primary on Aug. 13.

Amy Greenwell Garden Nursery work day

A volunteer work day is planned from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Amy Greenwell Garden Nursery.

Attendees will plant aalii and weed the taro garden. The group will also do some spot cleaning and revisit some of the areas that have been cleaned out on past Saturdays.

For convenient parking, drive up the old driveway just south of mile-marker 110 on Mamalahoa Highway and park on the gravel or on the lawn at the top of that driveway. There is also parking above the visitor center

Gloves, tools, cold water and energy bars will be provided.

Libraries closed for Independence Day

In observance of Independence Day, all public libraries will be closed from Saturday through Monday.

Normally closed Thursday, Kealakekua Public Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

Kathe makes college dean’s list

John Galt Kathe of Kailua-Kona has been named to the dean’s list at Clemson University for the spring semester.

Kathe is majoring in production studies in performing arts. To be named to the dean’s list, a student achieved a grade-point average between 3.50 and 3.99 on a 4.0 scale.
