Suspect sought in vehicle break-in at Hilo restaurant

Hawaii Island police are searching for a suspect in a reported vehicle break-in Monday in a parking lot of a Pauahi Street restaurant in Hilo.

At approximately 2:54 p.m., an unidentified male described as a younger, “local” man with a slim-to-medium build was captured on video surveillance breaking into a car and removing an item. The man was wearing light shorts and a light short, a white hat and a dark backpack.

The suspect sped away from the seen on a blue scooter or moped in an unknown direction.

Police request that anyone who recognizes his photograph or has any information on the break-in contact the Hawaii Police Department’s nonemergency number at 935-3311 or call Officer Tyler Jelsma at 961-2203.

Informants who prefer to remain anonymous may contact the islandwide Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
